Benefit Concert on 7th October 2006 at Volkshaus Zürich Tibetan songs from traditional to pop. Approximately 300 to 400 people attended Sonam Palkyi's Benefit Concert on Saturday evening, 7th October 2006, in the White Hall of the Community Centre of Switzerland. The audience was greatly inspired by Sonam's pure and golden voice and by the songs she sang with such enthusiasm. The programme played on the tension between soft sounds and pop highlights. The audience were transported by the music's traditional elements into Tibet's distant past, and then returned rapidly to the present. Additional colour was added to the concert by the lively contributions from Mr Palden Dhakyel and Mr Tenzin Chüyang - who were applauded with great enthusiasm - and enhanced by Tibetan costume and dance routines. Sonam was inspired to hold this concert by her uncle, His Eminence Namkha Trimed Rinpoche, who recently said on the telephone to her: "You have now reached the point in your career where you must know for what purpose you wish to use your voice". Sonam's mother grew up in the refugee camp in Orissa, therefore Sonam was already aware at a young age of the difficult life faced by many of the refugees there, and had an early desire to make a contribution in order to improve the living conditions of the Tibetans in Orissa. Thus the foundation-stone was laid for this benefit concert for the support of poor and aged, single people in the refugee camp in Orissa. YesheKhando.net
