Early numbers (not the official ones mind you, but accurate nonetheless) are indicating that American Idol winner Jordin Sparks' debut album will finish in an extremely disappointing ninth place on the charts with only around 100,000 copies sold. Now, this is a devastating blow to Sparks burgeoning career, if true. Only last year, Taylor Hicks' debut sold almost 300,000 copies in its first week. A ninth place finish is simply surprising, given the hype and expectations surrounding any Idol winner. Sadly, Sparks couldn't even pull ahead of former Idol winner Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride, which has been on the charts for over a month. Jordin Sparks debut album (entitled "Jordin Sparks") has received generally positive reviews and it was mostly assumed that the album would perform moderately well. There were some interesting developments that may have had something to do with disappointing sales. The album was released on the Tuesday before "Black Friday" the biggest shopping day of the year. Wal-Mart has an exclusive deal with The Eagles and their new album, which finished in fourth place ahead of Sparks. The High School Musical 2 Soundtrack jumped into the top ten once again, likely thanks to parents buying early gifts for their children. Josh Groban took the number one spot for his Christmas album, followed closely by Alicia Keys. It will be interesting to see how American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis fares when his debut album (ADD: Audio Day Dream) is released a week from now on Tuesday, December 4. I always felt that not only was Lewis more suited to head into the studio and immediately create a solid album, but that his sales potential dwarfed Sparks. Jordin is a great singer, but there's no hook about her. She has no edge. Lewis brings a lot to the table, with his song writing and sonics experimentations. Still, maybe the public is going to make these Idol alumni earn their keep and is finished blindly purchasing their quickly produced debut records.
