Buddha Boys: A pleasant surprise
By Lobsang Wangyal
MCLEOD GANJ, India, 18 July 2006 The Buddha Boys itched for a change in the current exile Tibetan music scene of mediocre pop and they did it. Illusion, the debut album produced by the Buddha Boys, has indeed come out as a pleasant surprise with band's original music.
Buddha Boys are composed of talents around four college-going Tibetan youths, who are very much interested in music. They are self-taught musicians and have been playing music together for the last three years. They got together to use their music talent for the Tibetan cause. That resulted in this debut album, which was launched on the Dalai Lama's 71st birthday.
Illusion has ten songs, which are all devoted to a free Tibet. Among the ten songs are one in Hindi titled "Yaadein" (Memories) and another in English "Excuse me Mr God". There is one cover song from the mid 90s Yak band score "Rangzen". The album has lyrics included.
The band's originality, diversity and a fine taste in music has made Illusion a must-buy this monsoon season.
The quartet from Chennai (formerly Madras), South India, comprising members named Tenzin Wangdak (lead and rhythm guitar), Tenzin Jigme (S) (drums), Tenzin Jigme (B) (lead guitar) and Lobsang Dhondup (bass guitar) — play what should be popularly known as "rock". The recording was done at Rainbow Bridge Studio in Chennai, India. Sanjeev P. Thomas directed the music and Jai Shankar helped in the mixing.
Though the album was produced by the band members themselves, their inspiration came from their very dear Aunty Aasha Reddy. She and her family have been very dear to the Tibetan students in Chennai and consider them as a part of their family.
